If the parabolic trough is strictly used to heat up a fluid to transport the heat there are seveal options. If the heated fulid is used to dryve a pump or turbine the requirements are again different. They have to do with temperature range mainly.
===(Hydraulic) Pump or turbine===
Some systems only use thermal expansion below the boiling point, to drive a hydraulic pump. Others use steam from boiling fuilds to drive a pump or turbine. In those cases the fluid can be water, or water mixed with other fluids to lower the boiling point (like ammonia).
===Transfer only===
For heat transfer only one can also use water and or steam. Mineral oil is not expensive and can be bought with different characteristics. Molten salts are used in some cases because they can transfer more heat. Salt melts at 90 degerees. Salt is also a good way to store heat. One could design a system that circulates mineral oil to transfer heat from the troughs to a water storage tank.

Parabolic trough solar technology is the most proven and lowest cost large-scale solar power technology available today, primarily because of the nine large commercial-scale solar power plants that are operating in the California Mojave Desert. These plants, developed by Luz International Limited and referred to as Solar Electric Generating Systems (SEGS), range in size from 14–80 MW and represent 354 MW of installed electric generating capacity. More than 2,000,000 m2 of parabolic trough collector technology has been operating daily for up to 18 years, and as of the end of the year 2001, these plants had accumulated 127 years of operational experience in [[http://www.jouercasino.eu/ casino en ligne francais]].
