Building efficiency is a well developed area. There are several zero emissions projects to visit. Regulations are in place requireing houses to be assessed when sold, or contain windows, designs and installations that reduce their energy use. The Energy Performance Assesment by which houses recieve a label is 100% subsidized.

It is not yet the common assumption, but one can easily see that the wheel hub motor will be the nr. one approach towards electrification of our consumer transportation. Not new cars, but converted existing cars. We do have an all electric Porche car (which ws made in 2008), we also have hydrogen car demo's.

Holland has a wide experience with fighting rising water levels. The expected water level rise in Holland however is beyond all historic bounds. Below a map of the middle of holland by the end of this century (1.5 meter rise). A lot of the problems are cause by river flows changing. There is of course a serious plan an analysis of the consequences of the water levels on our country. The waterflow experts are in [[http://www.wldelft.nl/ Delft]].

Climate Change will impact Holland in many ways, the [[http://www.knmi.nl/klimaatscenarios/ Royal Institute of Meteorology]] provides data regardig different scenarios. The [[http://www.pbl.nl/nl/dossiers/klimaatverandering/index.html Planning Bureau for Living Environment]] provides planning and analysis, also regarding greenhouse gas emissions. [[http://www.nlenergieenklimaat.nl/ Agentschap nl ]] Manages the subsidies for individual purchase of renewable energy as well as subsidies for research and development and tax incentives. Politically one of the most comprehensive campaigns is that of [[http://www.nederlandkrijgtnieuweenergie.nl/main.asp The Netherlands Gets New Energy]] which has resulted in a cross political program and the so called [[http://www.rincker.nl/documenten/Declaration%20of%20Utrecht.pdf Declaration of Utrecht (english version)]](to which adherence is in doubt now that the least ethousiastic VVD won the elections). Entrepeneurs have organized unde the name [[http://www.degroenezaak.com/ De Gorene Zaak]]. In all programs and projects the vested interests are represnented, and often Europe is used as a source of unsuspected laws and lobby succes. It is the hope of many that this will be recognized at some point. Part of this is the so called Koploper (frontrunner) philosophy by [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAnziUWGjN0 Jan Rotmans]] of [[http://www.urgenda.nl/ Urgenda]].
Personally I think the resistance is purely borne out of a desire for energy companies to become the banks of the future. Banks are likely to fail because energy is more important than moeny. No energy economy needs to emerge however. If the transition is done right energy will become abundant and low cost, reducing all cost in society [[http://www.duurzaamisgratis.nl/ in perpetuity]], creating a return to true symbiosis of man and nature. We need to ask : At what cost do we free one individual from carbon emitting sources of energy? I made a rough calculation [[http://www.rincker.nl/index.php?Page=178 here]].

Heliostats turn the panel towards the sun so it recieves maximum insolation. It also prevens the glass from reflecting much light at certain angels. This can be cost effective and pay off in several years. The installation can yield 30% more.

Multiple small mirror installtions can be build cost effective and are less sensitive to wind.
====Parabolic Trough Collectors====
These collectors concentrate 6 to 12 times in small scale settings and produce low temperature steam. Design and controls haven been well developed and are open source.
====Photovoltaics====
When considering PV there are several aspects to consider. PV panels may be more expensive than self laminated PV cells. Instead of glass one can use special foils. The reduced weight can cut cost considerably. The knowledg investement into building integrated PV may be well rewarded and create local jobs.

====Solar Thermal Power Plants====
Touted as the cheapest way to generate energy solar thermal power plants are now being build around the world. One can swap the cost of a high efficiency turbine with a lower efficiency turbine but more heliostats. There are several technologies still being developped that will make it easier to convert heat to electricity. Direct use of steam for cooking or driving force has been proven. For Holland there is less of a market, more attention being given to vacuum tube collectors.

=====Methods of getting energy=====
Recently a program started in which a number of companies where invited to develop a vialbelscalable seaweed farming method for the North Sea or estuaries. This may be of interest as it aims operate offshore (possible in cobinations with windfarms). To date no deepwater fertilization technique has been adequately tested, but it is clear from the Krill thriving in the North Pole opwellings that there is huge potential there.
Low cost algae programs are not that viable in Holland, but they are in [[http://www.energymicrolgae.com/ India]], where 25 grams dry mass per m2 per day is produced using seawater at very low cost.

=====The fight for power=====
There is a clear battle between distributed renewables vs. centralized legacy solutions. The big energy companies are pushing the smart grid, windfarms as well as nucelar power (a new plant in Borsele). They also plan to build three new coal fired power plants Holland does not need but are conveniently located in terms of coal supply and cooling water. Their activities seem to be aimed at consolidating dependence on these organizations, improving billing efficiency as well improving energy efficiency and utilization of the electricity. The smart grid has been promoted using every reason imaginable, in South Africa it is reducing power outages, in Holland it is taxability and efficiency. Privately it is said that distributed renewables wil make these companies obsolete. One reason why electric vehicles are slowed down may be because they would create an obvious sink for renewable surplus in the home, making the smartgrid less necessary. Cooperating in generating electricity and heat is obstructed by laws lobbied for by the existing energy oligagy (for example, you can not charge more for heat than the gas suppliers, even if people agree). You can not sell electricity to your neighbour.
