- One may think solar energy is new
- But it has a long history
- Ancient arabs have been said to distill using the sun
- This was noted by Augustin Mouchot in his book about solar energy written in 1896
- He constructed a solar boiled connected to a steam engine
- France improved its coal supply making solar to expensive
- Mouchot : "Eventually industry will no longer find in Europe the resources to satisfy its prodigious expansion... Coal will undoubtedly be used up. What will industry do then?"
- Chicago Shuman started his experiments due to the curious nature of glass
- Glass created what was called the greenhouse effect, it allowed short wavelengths through, but blocked long wavelengths
- Heat can be created from short wavelengths, but it radiates out as infra red long wavelengths
- Glass can trap heat
